RHYTHM LOGIC SOUND ABSORPTION COMPARISON OF ORRTHOTONE
ACOUSTIC FOAM TILES
Three grades of foam have been chosen as the most consistent
and reliable for the Rhythm Logic Range of product. The grade
coding is two sets of numbers. The first signifies the typical
density of the foam and the second set, separated by a hyphen,
is the hardness.
1. 35-200 N.R.C Rating = .47 COLOUR –
LIGHT GREY
2. 29-400 N.R.C Rating = .47 COLOUR –
DARK CHARCOAL
3. 21-300 N.R.C Rating = .43 COLOUR –
CHARCOAL

Sound Absorption Coefficient (S.A.C) has
been measured on a wide range of foams in order to study the
influence of composition on the acoustic properties.
Noise Reduction Coefficient (N.R.C) has
been calculated as the average of sound absorption coefficients
at various frequencies as listed in test results carried out
by RMIT University.
Sound Absorbing Foams are being used on account of the following
properties:
- Good Noise Reduction Coefficient
- Reverb Attenuation
- Frequency Equalization
- Cost Effectiveness
- Good Fire Rating (Low smoke developed index in the AS1530/3
test
when used in the building industry.
Uniform cell structure is believed to be
a major contributing factor to the good sound absorbing characteristics
of these 3 grades of foams.
Density, Hardness and the Porosity also
contribute to the sound absorption characteristics of foam
confirming that air flow resistance has a major influence
on sound absorption.
OVERVIEW
Sound waves are a form of energy. When sound waves impinge
on a surface, some of them are reflected back towards the
source, some may be absorbed and the balance is transmitted.
Sound absorbing materials lower or attenuate the noise level
by absorbing part of the sound energy. Typical sound waves
may consist of a mixture of low, medium and high frequency
components.
Acoustic Foams are good absorbents of medium
and high frequency sounds. When foam sheets or shapes are
used at the appropriate thickness and configuration, they
are capable of lowering the noise levels in any environment.
Sources of Noise
- Typical low to medium frequency noise or rumble –
to 500 Hz: compressors, grinders, crushers, engines, presses
and exhaust fans.
- Mid range hum or chatter – 250 to 2000 Hz: Office
Machinery, Computer printers, Human voice.
- High Frequency squeal – 1000 to 2000 Hz: Ultrasonics,
Hydraulic Pumps, fast small engines, Industrial cutting
and polishing.
